The clearest sign your colour analysis is wrong

Updated: Apr 8

There is one surefire way that you can know you're wearing the wrong selection of colours.

Over the years, I've styled a number of women whose colouring is in one of the Autumn seasons. Which means they look something like this...

Head and shoulders of Julia Roberts, Sofia Vergara and Natalie Portman against a brown and white feature

(But actually, these are just a few examples and Autumn colouring could be any of literally 700 different unique combinations.)

These women had already had their colours done before we met.

They knew their season, and each of them believed they had Winter colouring.

To give you a visual of what that means, here are a few famous Winter faces.

Different to the Autumn palettes, no?

The Winter palettes are vastly different from the Autumn palettes.

This makes a huge difference as to which colours look amazing on these women.

For example, women with Autumn colouring each have one or more hues of orange that they can wear beautifully. Whereas the Winter women look drained by orange.

For each of my clients, they knew that they could wear oranges and feel fantastic.

And often once we got into their wardrobe, it was evident that they were naturally drawn to colours that were well outside the Winter range - colours like rust, orange and mustard yellows.

It didn't take long for them to agree with me that their colour analysis had been done incorrectly.

I wish it wasn't such a common mistake, yet I see it happening more often now because AI-based colour analysis is not fully up to the task.

If you think your colour analysis might be incorrect, this is the clearest sign:

  • If you look great in any shade of orange, you won't suit any of the six Winter or Summer palettes

  • If you look great in black, you won't suit any of the six Autumn or Spring palettes.

There are other ways that your analysis could be wrong, but this is the clearest and easiest one to spot.

What does it mean to look great in a colour? It means it flatters your features. For example, you might consistently receiving glowing compliments when you wear it.

Or, you'll notice any of these effects.
